What to do with my marriage?
Yesterday I was denied a promotion at work. I went home in tears and, instead of comforting me, my husband told me that he doesn’t want to continue the relationship.
He has a way of always kicking me when I’m down – hurting me when I’m already in pain – as well as trying to drag me down when I have acheived something big.
First, I don’t know how to forgive him for these things or trust him in the future. He broke up with me 5 days after I gave birth. He changed his mind the next day. After I successfully defending my thesis, I came home and he ignored me for a couple hours, then started a fight. Now the promotion thing.
Why would someone do that? I don’t even understand.
Also, I don’t know how to fix things. I don’t think I can do it. He is depressed, can’t find a job in his field, overweight, doesn’t exercise, smokes and escapes to porn and other activities on the computer.
Nothing I do makes him happy. I nurture him, build him up, praise him, help him search for jobs, give him fantastic sex, and rarely mention his issues, as he is very sensitive.
I don’t even know what more I can do to make him happy. He just wants to blame me for his problems. He has these vague complaints, You want to be treated with respect but you have no idea how to give it and You always undermine me and you dictate my life …but he won’t give concrete examples or explain to me how I can improve.
I tell him that he’s free to move anywhere, go anywhere.. He’s free to do anything he wishes. We’ve both had to make compromises but I’m not here to control his life. He needs to find his own happiness. But he refuses.
What do I do? Do I forgive him and say that I will patiently do anything to help him get better and improve his life? Do I insist that he gets medical help before we go back to normal?
He can’t keep breaking up with me like this. How can I live my life with someone who I KNOW is going to sabotage my happy moments and deliberately hurt me when I’m vulnerable?
But I believe in marriage and want to help him.
He obviously doesn’t love, respect or even care about you. I would get out now and move on. Find a life for yourself. You don’t need someone bringing you down. I accidently gave Farmer Jed a thumbs up, but I meant to give a thumbs down. So I give him a double thumbs down. He is obviously someone who has never been in a good relationship. I too was married to a man like yours, I got out after 17 years. Now I am in a wonderful relationship. So I know where you are coming from, and it is much better to be rid of him.
